I often find I get frustrated with the smallest delay in the software I use. Whether it be native applications or web-based applications, I can't tolerate any hesitations. This is one of my greatest pet peeves. With the new advances in technology and fiber optics, this should really boost the speed at which content can be delivered to the user. Google is really pushing the service to new levels and this goes right along with Google's business model of delivering services over the internet. The current infrastructure available is a limitation to the possibilities of advancement.
Totally agree. Can't wait until everyone is connecting with gigabit Internet and data can fly all over the world instantaneously.
ReplyDeleteIt's so crazy how spoiled we are, but it's true, any delay and we're annoyed. Things that we expect should be instant should be, and things we think should take awhile we're fine waiting for. I'm just glad that technology is to a point where it can spoil us with this feature.
ReplyDeleteI think that higher speeds will help us some, but mobile connections and larger amounts of data will keep slowing us down. As a web developer, I know that as the technology improves, service provides will want to throw more at consumers (higher resolution images, more processor-intensive user interfaces, etc.)
ReplyDeleteI remember playing Warcraft III on a 52 Kbps connection. Somehow, that experience is no worse than my experience playing on a 5 Mbps connection. I doubt that Gigabit will make it any better.
ReplyDeleteAs someone who just found out that Google Fiber should be installed where I live in the next few weeks, this excites me.
ReplyDeleteIn response to others, Google's play here is not to take over telecommunications. It sends a message to the entrenched, almost monopolistic tele-comm companies that more should be expected from them. It also raises awareness among consumers that this bandwidth is even possible. I absolutely love Google for going this route and am also incredibly happy to live somewhere where I can use it!
No matter how fast things get, we will always be left wanting more. The same thing happened when we went from dial up to dsl. Now it's on to fiber. I wonder when that will be too slow..
